If you were trying to solve a difficult math equation, which would you do? Move to an area free of distractions and focus on the problem OR Sit in the middle of a crowd of people, turn on a television and hop on one foot, while trying to determine the answer?
I’m sure most people would agree that the first situation would enhance your thinking. It’s hard to solve a problem when you’re in a noisy environment. When you can completely focus on a problem you will get better answers.
The second scenario would make it difficult for you to focus on finding a solution.
Similarly, journaling enhances your thinking because it eliminates the 'mental noise'. Few people would sit in a noisy room to do serious thinking. But if your mind is cluttered and disorganized, how can you expect to arrive at the best answers for tough problems?
Journaling in a stream of consciousness, as I teach in the Journaling E-Course would help you to eliminate all the mental noise that is taking you away from the solution that you're looking for. This method first taught by Julia Cameron helps artists to move past their mental clutter, noise and inhibitions to access their creativity.
Benefits include increased clarity, effectiveness, productivity, enhanced energy levels and a huge dose of creativity where previously none existed!
I have personally used journaling to work through the pain in my life, solve problems around decision making and also for goal setting when it comes to bigger themes in life.
Have you used journaling to remove the mental clutter that is between you and your 'aha' moment?
I wrote about my own journaling journey along with pictures of my drawer full of journals in Part I of this series. Journaling also allows you to access mindfulness by helping you to understand how to feel what you're feeling, fully. I discuss this at length in Part II of the Journaling series of posts. Check it out here, if you haven't already.
P.S: The enrolment for the next Journaling course begins July 15th. If you'd like to stay updated on the details for registration and sign up, make sure to sign up with your email address here.
